Srinagar, Aug 9: The revered Baba Fareed Ziyarat Sharief in Garkote village of Uri along Line of Control (LoC) has been included on the tourism map, marking a significant development for the area and giving a boost to pilgrimage tourism in the constituency.
MLA Uri Dr Sajjad Shafi Uri who attended the Baba Fareed Urs on Sunday as the chief guest, highlighted the government’s efforts to promote tourism and pilgrimage tourism across the constituency and announced the same.
The development follows sustained efforts by residents of Garkote A and Garkote B, who have come together after nearly 25 years and expressed support for the development initiatives being undertaken in the area.
“Funds have been earmarked for the development of the shrine and its surroundings, including the construction of a park, visitor sheds and improvement of road connectivity to facilitate pilgrims, tourists and local residents,” he said.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Sajjad said several areas of Uri have been brought onto the tourism map, with a special focus on eco-tourism and pilgrimage tourism.
He said Baba Fareed Ziyarat Sharief is also being developed as an important destination under the pilgrimage tourism initiative.
The MLA said projects worth crores of rupees have been sanctioned for the development of the Uri constituency and assured that additional funds would be secured for further development in the coming days.
Dr Shafi further said efforts were underway to provide road connectivity to Baba Fareed from both sides, which would improve accessibility for devotees, visitors and local residents.
He reiterated his commitment to strengthening tourism infrastructure and connectivity while ensuring the overall development of the Uri constituency.
Residents of Garkote A and B expressed appreciation for the efforts of the MLA, saying the development of the shrine would improve facilities for devotees and enhance the tourism potential of the area.
They said the inclusion of Baba Fareed Ziyarat Sharief on the tourism map would not only promote religious tourism but also generate greater opportunities for local communities and contribute to the overall development of the region.
