Silchar: An auto-rickshaw driver was killed and two passengers were injured after a truck collided with an e-rickshaw on NH-6 near Basic Chourangi in Hailakandi district on Saturday afternoon.The deceased was identified as Abu Sufian Laskar, the driver of the e-rickshaw carrying a load of pineapples. According to witnesses, the truck rammed into the vehicle, leaving the e-rickshaw mangled. Laskar died on the spot, while two passengers sustained injuries and were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.The accident triggered protests by local residents, who blocked the national highway demanding immediate safety measures at the accident-prone stretch. Traffic remained disrupted for some time before police, backed by a large contingent, reached the spot and brought the situation under control.Police recovered the body and sent it to Hailakandi Civil Hospital for autopsy. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact cause of the accident and identify the truck involved.Residents alleged that the Basic Chourangi stretch has witnessed several fatal accidents in the past, claiming that at least four people had lost their lives there earlier. They demanded the installation of speed breakers and other traffic-calming measures to prevent further mishaps.
