Authorities have decided to impose restrictions across Kashmir from Monday following protests in several areas over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, officials said on Sunday.
Senior officials said the measures were being taken as a precaution to maintain law and order after demonstrations were reported from parts of the Valley.
Restrictions will remain in place in all districts, they said, adding that the situation would be reviewed depending on ground assessments.
Protests were held on Sunday in some Shia-majority areas of Kashmir and also in Kargil district of Ladakh after Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei’s death.
Large groups of people gathered in several localities, raising slogans and expressing grief.
In some areas, shops and business establishments remained shut, while traffic movement was disrupted temporarily as demonstrators assembled on roads.
Police and paramilitary forces were deployed at sensitive locations to prevent any untoward incident, officials said, adding that the protests largely remained peaceful.
Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, accompanied by Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Vidhi Kumar Birdi, visited several places in Srinagar to take stock of the situation.
Authorities said the restrictions were aimed at ensuring peace and preventing any escalation. They urged people to cooperate with the administration and maintain calm.(KNS).
