Kolkata: An ATM fraud gang has duped a 58-year-old resident of South Port of Rs 1,61,500. The victim’s debit card got trapped in an ATM in the Ekbalpore area around 2 pm last Saturday. When he contacted a helpline number displayed inside the kiosk, the person on the line advised him that he could return to collect his trapped card after 6.30 pm and instructed him to follow some “basic rules”.However, beginning around 5.46 pm, the victim received a series of SMS alerts informing him of multiple unauthorised cash withdrawals from his account. The perpetrator executed seven transactions of Rs 10,000 each, alongside a single major transaction of Rs 91,500. Realising that he had been tricked, the victim approached the bank authorities and police. Local cops have registered a case and started a probe to identify the culprit. They are also examining CCTV camera footage from the vicinity.Cops said this incident follows a pattern of ATM frauds in Kolkata that began in 2024.
