“If I survive, I will surely oust the BJP from power in Bengal. Their central leadership is trying to disintegrate the Trinamool Congress. They are threatening our elected public representatives like MPs, MLAs, and councillors,” she said at a sit-in demonstration at Y-channel in Kolkata.
Banerjee claimed that her party leaders, councillors, members of Municipal Corporations and MLAs were continuously threatened by the police that they would get arrested if they do not resign.
“My place is in the heart of the people. Torture and atrocities are going on in West Bengal as Trinamool MLAs, councillors and leaders are not allowed to come out of their residence,” Banerjee said. She claimed that counting was not done in 177 seats.
Banerjee was accompanied by five MPs and six party MLAs on Tuesday at her first public programme since the assembly election results on May 4. The MPs present were the party’s Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha, Kalyan Banerjee, MP Mala Roy and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien, Dola Sen and Samirul Islam. Currently, Trinamool has 41 MPs. The legislators present were Firhad Hakim, Biman Bandopadhyay, Nayna Bandopadhyay, Madan Mitra, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, and Ashok Deb.
Trinamool’s tally in the 294-seat West Bengal assembly, which was 80, came down to 78, as Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, were expelled from the party.
