Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday took oath as an MLA on the opening day of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati, with protem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary administering the oath.

Sarma delivered his oath in Assamese. Patowary said, “All the members can take an oath in any recognised language they wish to. They can submit their oath copies to the assembly office.”

Following the chief minister, newly elected legislators began taking oath in multiple languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Bodo and Sanskrit.

The NDA alliance — made up of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front — returned to power with a dominant victory in the Assam assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House.

The BJP emerged as the biggest winner with 82 seats, while both the AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each.

Among opposition parties, the Indian National Congress won 19 seats and Raijor Dal secured two as part of a six-party opposition bloc.
The All India United Democratic Front and All India Trinamool Congress contested independently and won two seats and one seat, respectively.
