Gandhinagar: Union home minister Amit Shah and Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel led the BJP’s statewide ‘Ashirwad ka Diya’ programme on Thursday evening by lighting a lamp at Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th birthday. They also attended a maha aarti at the city’s Jagannath temple.

Deputy chief minister Harsh Sanghavi joined a large number of students at a private university on the outskirts of Ahmedabad to observe the programme.Similar events were organised across the state at temples, lakes, riverfronts, public squares, city gates, dairy premises, statues of prominent personalities, traffic circles, town halls, gardens and APMCs.The Somnath temple trust launched eco-friendly, reusable packs of prasad on Thursday. The packs were designed by National Institute of Design (NID) and Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB). Chief minister Patel virtually launched the facility. Prime Minister Modi is the chairperson of the trust.An official statement said several programmes, including blood donation drives and awareness campaigns, were held at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to mark the occasion.A statement by Vishv Umiyadham said that thousands of lamps were lit at the stroke of midnight on Thursday to celebrate the PM’s birthday.
