Guwahati: With Team India progressing to the final in the T20 World Cup, young cricketers in the city and members of the cricket fraternity say the moment has become a major source of inspiration for aspiring players.Cricket coaches and young players said interest in the sport among youngsters has risen noticeably, with many now dreaming beyond the state level and aiming to represent the country internationally.Mehboob Alam, a cricket coach from Assam’s Golaghat district, said the ambitions of budding cricketers have shifted over time. He attributed the change to greater exposure to international cricket, increased media coverage and success stories of players from the region.

“These youngsters have been inspired by Riyan, and if he had been in the team, they would have been inspired even more. Every youngster takes the sport professionally,” said Alam, who has been coaching Uma Chetry for a long time.Alam said the growth of cricketing infrastructure in the state in recent years has also helped produce more players. He pointed to newly unveiled stadiums in Umrangso and Barpeta, saying training would become more professional and enjoyable.Youngsters also expressed confidence that India will win its upcoming match against New Zealand on Sunday. Anubhav Vishwakarma (13), a resident of Bokakhat, said the team’s form has been strong. “I have been inspired by the team, and it is my dream to play for the team one day, if I get the chance,” he said.Nibedita Das (13), who has been playing cricket for two years, said she draws inspiration from Uma Chetry and hopes to play for India. “Watching my role models has motivated me to train harder and pursue my dreams seriously,” Das said.Officials of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) said participation among young girls has increased significantly, particularly after the Indian women’s team performed impressively in the World Cup last year.
