Itanagar: A 12-member Indian Army mountaineering team scaled 6,889-metre Mt Khangchengyao in North Sikkim, an official report said on Thursday.Led by Major Vatti Chandra Kumar, the 2 JAT Battalion (Mooltan) team reached the summit at 10.28 am on Sept 15 and unfurled the Tricolour and the JAT Regiment flag, according to a report from the East Siang DIPRO.The expedition began from Rayang in Arunachal Pradesh on Aug 17. The team underwent acclimatisation at Lachung, Thangu and Giagoan before starting the ascent.The mountaineers negotiated rugged terrain, steep slopes and glaciers in extreme cold and low-oxygen conditions.The successful ascent reflected the team’s physical endurance, mental resilience and coordination in challenging high-altitude conditions, the report said.The achievement adds to the mountaineering record of 2 JAT Battalion, whose teams have earlier scaled several Himalayan peaks, including Mt Jago Kangri (6,550 metres) in the Siachen Glacier region, Mt Bandarpunch (6,316 metres), Mt Satopanth (7,075 metres) and Mt Jogin-I (6,465 metres).The expedition further highlighted the battalion’s focus on adventure and high-altitude mountaineering, the report added.
