Guwahati: The Indian Army, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), conducted a joint flood relief exercise, ‘Jal Rahat’, on Saturday at IIT Guwahati, highlighting inter-agency synergy and preparedness for natural calamities.Initiated by the Red Horns Division of Gajraj Corps, the exercise was designed to demonstrate coordination among flood relief columns and enhance response capability in the event of severe flooding. A defence release said the drill showcased the modalities of flood relief operations, the roles of various agencies, and the use of high-end technology and innovative methods for rescue.Specialist teams depicted simulated rescue missions, including drone-based surveillance, logistics outreach to stranded villagers, and evacuation of drowning individuals. Deep-water rescue skills were also demonstrated by Army, NDRF, and SDRF units. The event was attended by Gajraj Corps general officer commanding Lt Gen Neeraj Shukla, along with senior officials from the Army, state administration, CAPFs, and disaster relief organisations, as well as NCC and NSS cadets and students from schools and colleges across Guwahati.Addressing the gathering, Lt Gen Shukla urged all ranks and cadets to adopt a “whole-of-society approach” to nation building, guided by the mantra of four Ps — Predict, Prepare, Protect, and Provide. The participating agencies committed to conducting regular joint training sessions, updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) and disaster relief plans, and investing in capacity building to strengthen emergency response mechanisms. Officials said the exercise underlined the importance of seamless coordination between civil and military agencies in safeguarding lives during floods, a recurring challenge in Assam.
