Hassan: Allegations that liquor is being sold as early as 4.30am at some outlets in Arasikere have raised questions about the functioning of the excise department. Beer and other varieties of liquor are reportedly available even before the town’s daily activities begin. The issue has drawn attention as Arasikere falls under the constituency of excise minister KM Shivalinge Gowda. While residents step out early to buy milk and newspapers or enjoy tea and coffee, some liquor outlets are allegedly selling alcohol before the permitted hours. There are also allegations that customers are being charged Rs 10 to Rs 20 above the maximum retail price (MRP), with some complaints suggesting even higher overcharging. The allegations have raised questions about whether excise officials are aware of these violations and what action, if any, has been taken.Residents have urged authorities to inspect the outlets, verify the allegations and take appropriate action against those found violating the rules. Excise inspector Ramya said the department is conducting regular operations against the illegal sale of ganja and liquor across the town and taluk. Several cases have already been registered, and staff members are carrying out daily inspections. “If illegal liquor sales are detected, action will be taken against those responsible,” she said.
