New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has invited applications for the appointment of Directors of three Indian Institutes of Technology – IIT Delhi, IIT Mandi and IIT Indore.
The Department of Higher Education issued separate advertisements for the three positions, with applications to be submitted by October 31, 2026. The Directors will serve as the academic and administrative heads of the respective institutions.
Under the eligibility criteria, candidates should hold a PhD with a first-class or equivalent qualification at the preceding degree level, preferably in engineering. Candidates from science, mathematics or management backgrounds may also be considered in exceptional cases.
Applicants are required to have an outstanding academic record and at least 10 years of teaching experience as a Professor in a reputed engineering or technology institute or university. They should also have experience of guiding PhD students and at least five years of administrative experience, along with leadership experience relevant to heading an Institute of National Importance.
The ministry has said candidates should preferably be below 60 years of age on the last date for receipt of applications. The posts carry a fixed pay of Rs 2.25 lakh per month, along with allowances as per rules.
The appointment will be made on a contractual basis for five years or until the Director attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. The selection will be based on recommendations of a Search-cum-Selection Committee, which will consider applications received in response to the advertisements as well as nominations from eminent persons.
The advertisements also put emphasis on research, teaching, industry-academia collaborations and administrative achievements. Applicants have been asked to submit a detailed resume, a two-page justification supporting their candidature and a two-page vision statement for the institution. They are also required to provide details of at least two distinguished individuals familiar with their work as referees.
The application process requires candidates to submit the prescribed application along with supporting documents to the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, in New Delhi. Candidates employed in government departments, autonomous organisations and public sector undertakings are required to apply through proper channel, with an advance copy sent to the ministry.
The ministry has also asked applicants to submit an electronic copy of the application, preferably in MS Word format. A certificate from the employer or competent authority confirming that no vigilance case is pending or contemplated against the applicant must also be attached.
The application forms seek detailed information on candidates’ academic and administrative experience, research projects, publications, patents, PhD scholars guided, academic collaborations, international exposure, awards and professional contributions.
The three institutes covered by the latest recruitment drive are IIT Delhi, IIT Mandi and IIT Indore. The advertisements do not specify that the positions are being filled because of a particular vacancy or term ending; they invite applications for appointment to the posts of Director at the three institutions.
