Ahmedabad: The civic body is executing the phased demolition of the dilapidated Subhash Bridge. On Saturday, officials successfully dismantled the span facing Shahibaug under expert supervision. The operation was conducted within a restricted, barricaded zone, with AMC officials ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent untoward incidents. Debris clearance is already underway, marking another step in the bridge’s total removal following the earlier dismantling of three riverbed spans on Wednesday.
Demolition of Subhash Bridge
Constructed in 1973, the 453-metre-long structure was urgently closed on December 4, 2025, after significant settlement was detected near Pillar No. 9. Following extensive inspections by experts from SVNIT, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Bombay, the state government initially approved a Rs 236-crore project to restore the bridge and construct two parallel two-lane structures. However, recent structural assessments revealed critical, new cracks within the bridge’s pillars. Due to these alarming findings, the AMC abandoned the restoration plan in favour of a complete demolition of the historic bridge. The site remains a controlled environment as the next phases of the dismantling process proceed according to the revised municipal schedule. This marks the end of a long-standing city landmark, clearing the path for new, safer infrastructure development across the Sabarmati riverbed.
