Adaliwal (Amritsar): The nagar panchayat of Adaliwal village in Amritsar’s Harsha Chhina block has passed a resolution to socially boycott couples who get married without parental consent, citing concerns over discipline and social harmony.Former sarpanch Harkanwaljit Singh said the decision was taken in a joint meeting of the panchayat and the village general body after four such marriages were reported in six months. “These incidents have given others an opportunity to humiliate us,” he said, adding that such marriages often lead to disputes and tensions among families, disturbing the village’s social fabric.Under the resolution, such couples will face complete social boycott, with villagers refraining from interacting with them or participating in their personal and community events. The panchayat has also directed that village officials, including the sarpanch, panchs and numberdar, will not assist such families in official or unofficial matters or sign documents for them. Couples may also be denied permission to reside in the village. He acknowledged the decision may be against the law, but said it reflects the collective will of the villagers. A copy of the resolution has been sent to the deputy commissioner’s office. In a separate decision, the panchayat resolved that no villager will support or help secure bail for anyone caught selling drugs. The panchayat said the measures are aimed at maintaining discipline and reducing disputes in the village. Deputy commissioner Dalwinderjit Singh said he had not yet received the resolution passed by Adaliwal village’s panchayat so far.
