Chennai: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s onward journey from Puducherry to Delhi was briefly disrupted on Sunday after two Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters carrying him were diverted to Tambaram Air Force Station due to adverse weather conditions at Chennai airport.The Home Minister was scheduled to arrive at Chennai airport from Puducherry by two IAF helicopters at around 3.26pm. However, with sudden rains and deteriorating weather conditions in Chennai, the helicopters were diverted as a safety precaution and landed at Tambaram Air Force Station at 3.31pm and 3.36pm, respectively, according to an official report on his movement.The diversion created tension at the airport, with security and police personnel making arrangements for the Home Minister’s movement.Subsequently, the Tambaram police informed airport authorities that Shah would travel to Chennai airport by road. He later reached the airport and boarded an IAF aircraft for Delhi, which departed at 4.54pm.Airport sources said the decision to divert the helicopters was taken due to the sudden change in weather and rains in Chennai, with safety of the VIP movement being the primary concern.A few other flights at Chennai airport were also delayed on Sunday amid the weather conditions.
