Kolkata: CM Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced that Aliah University will be brought under the state higher education dept and that there will be no separate education system based on religion. The CM said, “There cannot be separate education systems in one state. Students can be judged only by merit, not by religion or any community. There will be one state, one education under the National Education Policy. Aliah University will function under higher education dept. No separate education system will remain,” the CM said.“We have withdrawn the financial criteria for Vivekananda Merit Scholarship. Anybody who wants to study abroad can avail of the scholarship. We are working for excellence, for the elevation of merit; there will be no discrimination here. Only Muslim students get scholarships while the rest will be deprived — this cannot be a govt policy. Student means students of all religions,” the CM said.President of The Aliah University Teachers Association (AUTA) Julfikar Ali said, “We will again write to the CM for reconsidering the decision. We had appealed to him that our university be kept under the minority affairs and madrasah education dept for a sustained academic and institutional growth, which includes funding, and also preserving the history and heritage. If the state govt finalises then we will have to comply.”
