“New AIADMK just a mask; the mask hiding BJP. AIADMK now hollow shell, had great tradition of defending TN people like DMK; but that AIADMK died long back,” said Rahul Gandhi. “AIADMK ‘eaten up’ from inside by PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah.”
Attack over 33% quota bill
The Constitution Amendment Bill for the implementation of Women’s Reservation from the 2029 general elections was defeated in the Lok Sabha on Friday, with the opposition parties voting against it.
A Constitution Amendment Bill is passed if it gets the support of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting.
In the division that took place on the debate on the three bills, 298 members supported the bill while 230 voted against it.
Attacking the government over the bill, Rahul Gandhi, “In so-called Women’s Bill, delimitation was hidden; idea was to reduce Tamil Nadu’s representation in ‘Union of India. BJP-led Centre brought new Bill on Apr 16, said they were trying to pass women’s bill, but it was passed in 2023. Delimitation move by BJP was to weaken strength of southern states, small states, north eastern states, alleges Rahul at poll rally in Tamil Nadu.”
A Constitution Amendment Bill needs a majority of the total membership of the House and a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting for its passing.The special sitting of Parliament was held amid campaign for assembly polls in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Elections have been held in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry and the results will be announced on May 4.
The One Hundred and Sixth Constitutional Amendment Act, 2023 (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam), passed in 2023 by Parliament provides for 33% (one-third) reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
The government has notified that it has come into force from April 16.
