Lucknow: Artificial Intelligence (AI) can play a major role in space technology, but it must be trained properly before it can be used effectively, said Sudhakar Shukla, head of geoinformatics and scientist at the Remote Sensing Applications Centre (RSAC), Uttar Pradesh.“AI is useful only when the data and training are proper. The data given to AI must be accurate and relevant, and the system needs to be trained properly to produce reliable results. If the training is incorrect, the results may be inaccurate,” Shukla said.He was speaking on the topic ‘AI in Space Technology’ at a remote sensing workshop organised by the Department of Geography at Avadh Girls’ Degree College on Wednesday.The programme was held to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Vikram Sarabhai, regarded as the father of the Indian space programme, and National Remote Sensing Day.Shukla said, “More than 22 terabytes (TB) of data are generated every day. Training AI with such a huge volume of data is a challenging task, but it can deliver highly useful results when done properly. AI is making remote sensing and geoinformatics more effective by helping analyse large volumes of satellite data quickly, track climate change, map resources and support better decision-making.”He said AI could be used in several fields, including disaster management, crop management and precision farming. By analysing satellite imagery and other datasets, AI can help identify changes on the ground and predict potential problems.Shukla also explained various AI techniques, including knowledge-based systems, neural networks, fuzzy systems and genetic algorithms. These methods help computers learn from data, identify patterns and make useful predictions.
