Ahmedabad: Vejalpur police detained a 25-year-old man and seized three smartphones after receiving a tip-off about an illegal call-centre operation allegedly being run through mobile applications on a public road near Fatehwadi.According to the complaint filed by Mehulkumar Hasmukh, a member of the surveillance squad attached to Vejalpur police station, the incident occurred on June 20. A police team was on patrol in the area when it received information that a man was using mobile phones to operate an unlawful call centre.The team questioned the suspect, Sarfaraz Sheikh, a resident of Fatehwadi, and detained him when he allegedly attempted to evade questioning. Three mobile phones were recovered from his possession.According to the complaint, technical analysis of the devices revealed data belonging to foreign nationals, including bank account details and login credentials.During further interrogation, police said the accused admitted to posing as Mark Anderson from a company called Lending USA and contacting foreign nationals for payday loan-related procedures.Police registered a case under the Information Technology Act and said further investigation is underway.
