Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has completed the demolition of the controversial Hatkeshwar flyover in the Khokhra area, months after work began on Aug 21, 2025. The completion of the work was met with jubilation by local citizens, traders and drivers, who burst firecrackers at the site. Construction of a new road in place of the flyover is already underway and nearing completion. The flyover had long been a flashpoint for public anger. Built at a cost of Rs 34 crore, the bridge deteriorated within just five years of its inauguration, prompting its closure and sustained protests by residents demanding its removal. Former councillor George Dias welcomed the development. “The Hatkeshwar Bridge, a symbol of corruption by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, has finally been demolished,” he said, adding that the poor quality of construction had been apparent within years of the bridge’s opening. In July 2025, the standing committee approved a proposal to demolish the structure at an additional cost of Rs 3.90 crore, with a three-month completion deadline. However, the project faced delays before demolition was finally completed in recent days. The episode has reignited debate over contractor accountability and quality control in civic infrastructure projects in the city.
