AHMEDABAD: A 17-year-old Class XII student from a school in Satellite died by suicide at her Sarkhej residence on Aug 31, hours after she was allegedly confronted by a woman over her friendship with the woman’s teenage son. Based on a complaint filed on Saturday, Sarkhej police have registered a case of abetment to suicide.The accused, Neha Gohil, 39, allegedly visited the girl’s home along with her son at around noon on Aug 31 when the teenager‘s parents were away at work.According to the complaint, the girl and Gohil’s son were classmates at a school in Satellite. Their families became aware of their interaction on social media about six months ago, following which both sets of parents reportedly counselled the teenagers to focus on their studies.The complaint stated that on Aug 29, the two students were found sitting together on the school grounds, prompting the principal to call the girl‘s parents. Two days later, Gohil and her son allegedly went to the girl’s residence.The girl’s family later examined CCTV footage from the housing society, which also records audio, along with the society chairman. According to the complaint, the footage captured an argument between Gohil and the girl that lasted around 30 minutes.The complainant alleged that during the confrontation, Gohil repeatedly told the girl to die if she truly loved her son and spoke about the effect of the incident on the family’s reputation. She also allegedly threatened to return later in the evening and confront the girl’s family.Later that day, the girl’s younger brother, who had been sent to buy milk, returned home and found her hanging from a ceiling fan with a plastic rope, the complaint stated. Neighbours were alerted immediately.After the postmortem and funeral proceedings, the family filed a complaint on Sunday. The complainant alleged that the confrontation subjected the minor to severe mental trauma and fear of social humiliation, leading her to take the extreme step.Sarkhej police have booked Gohil for abetment to suicide and launched an investigation.
