Ahmedabad: An 18-year-old woman allegedly took her grandmother’s gold ornaments from a household locker and handed them to her boyfriend, who was in need of money, police said.The theft came to light after the family found that three tolas of gold, worth around Rs 3 lakh, were missing from the locker at their Ghatlodia home. The family initially believed the ornaments had been misplaced and searched the house for nearly a month.According to the complaint filed by the woman’s 56-year-old father, the family had shifted to Ghatlodia from Banaskantha after his wife’s death. He lives with his mother, son and two daughters and runs a grocery shop.The complainant said his elderly mother trusted her granddaughter and would ask her to keep or remove jewellery from the locker. On April 2, his son opened the locker and found the ornaments missing.While the family searched for the jewellery, the teenager allegedly showed little interest, raising suspicion among her siblings. Family members questioned her, but she allegedly gave evasive replies.The father eventually warned that he would approach police and lodge a complaint if the ornaments were not found. According to the complaint, the teenager then broke down and allegedly admitted to taking the jewellery.She reportedly told her family that she had been in a relationship with Jalam Singh alias Tinaji Thakor for around one-and-a-half years. She allegedly said he needed money and that she had taken the gold ornaments from the locker and given them to him.The father subsequently lodged a complaint with Ghatlodia police against his daughter and her boyfriend, alleging breach of trust and cheating.Police are investigating the alleged theft, the role of the boyfriend and the whereabouts of the jewellery. They are also taking steps to recover the ornaments, police said.
