Jamshedpur: Door-to-door garbage collection has remained irregular in Adityapur for the past three weeks, triggering anger among residents and ward councillors. Several councillors protested at the Adityapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) office on Thursday against the poor sanitation services.“The officials could not reply as to why garbage collection has been suspended in nearly two-thirds of the wards for the past 20 days,” said ward number 17 councillor Neetu Sharma.With garbage collection vehicles failing to reach homes regularly, many residents have been forced to dispose of kitchen waste in their backyards or along the roadside. Heaps of waste have accumulated at several places across wards.“During monsoon, the garbage heaps emit a foul smell,” said Prem Kumar, a resident of LIG Colony.Residents have also complained that the irregular garbage collection and cleaning have led to a sharp increase in the mosquito menace in the municipal area.Councillors said door-to-door garbage collection has been irregular in wards 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 11, 15, 18, 19, 22, 23, and 30 for the past three weeks.“Four meetings have been held in the past five months since the new governing body took charge, but the situation on the ground remains unchanged in several wards,” said an entrepreneur from the Adityapur industrial area, requesting anonymity.Attributing the disruption to the lack of a dumping site, AMC mayor Sanjay Sardar said, “We have identified a site at Kashidih in ward 9 for the construction of a dumping ground. But area residents have demanded that a waste treatment plant be installed before dumping operations begin.”The AMC, which has a population of around 2.75 lakh across 35 wards, generates around 35 tonnes of municipal solid waste on a daily basis.
