The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday adjourned until September 14 the hearing of a petition filed by a woman accusing Bengal cricketer Abishek Porel of having sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage, after the West Bengal government sought more time to take the investigation forward following his arrest.
Porel was arrested on Monday night in connection with the complaint filed by the medical student.
A report was placed before the bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, following which the state sought an adjournment to allow the police to proceed with the investigation following the cricketer’s arrest.
According to a PTI report, another accused in the case, reportedly a friend of Porel, has yet to be apprehended. The police are continuing their efforts to trace him as the investigation progresses.
Adjourning the hearing, Justice Bhattacharyya directed that the matter be listed again on September 14.
Porel, who has played in the IPL for Delhi Capitals, was arrested by Mogra police following a July 14 order of the Calcutta High Court directing the police to arrest him and seize his electronic devices.
According to a police officer, the complainant, a third-year medical student from Karnataka, alleged that Porel sexually assaulted and abused her after promising to marry her. She claimed that the two first met in 2023 and were subsequently in a relationship for around three years.
In her petition before the High Court, the woman also alleged that Porel threatened to make photographs of their intimate moments public.
A district court in Chinsurah subsequently remanded Porel to three days of police custody after denying his bail plea.
The case was originally filed on June 30 and registered under multiple sections of the BNS and IT Act, including Sections 69, 311, 318, 66 and 72.
According to the complaint, the woman and Porel had decided to get married and had also travelled abroad together. However, differences allegedly arose between them around one-and-a-half years ago. The matter had reached the police station at the time, but no formal complaint was filed.
Porel has not played competitive cricket since the end of IPL 2026, during which he featured in only four matches for the Delhi franchise.
