Sumit Roy is produced in court on Saturday

Midnapore: Bengal CID told the Midnapore CJM’s court on Saturday that Sumit Roy, personal assistant to Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee, had revealed during questioning that he deposited money into the party fund on Banerjee’s instructions. In its forwarding letter during Sumit’s court production, CID said he had stated under Section 180 of BNSS that party cashier T Ghosh had given him money to deposit. The investigating agency claimed Sumit had denied receiving any money linked to the alleged govt land fraud and said he had visited Midnapore several times for party work. The court remanded Sumit and three other accused — Lakshmi Bhuiya, Amit Ghosh and Nitya Ray — in five days’ CID custody against the agency’s request for seven days. Sumit has already spent eight days in police custody.A defence bail plea for Sumit was initially made but later withdrawn. APP Syed Nazim Habib, however, said the judge rejected the plea. The defence sought continuation of medication prescribed for Sumit’s sleep problems and requested that the permitted 20-minute meeting with his lawyer be extended by 10 minutes. Habib said the medicine order remained in force, while the meeting duration was unchanged.Sumit’s wife, Susmita Ghosh Roy, met him in the courtroom and asked about his health and whether he was receiving food.Arguing for Lakshmi and Amit, lawyer Mrinal Chowdhury alleged that they had been falsely implicated and had accepted money as brokerage fees. He said CID had not specified how much money Lakshmi allegedly received.CID filed a charge sheet on Sept 2 against four people, including former Midnapore MLA Sujoy Hazra, in a Debra PS case involving alleged extortion in the name of securing jobs. Several bank accounts were mentioned in the charge sheet.Habib said CID sought Sumit’s custodial interrogation and permission to continue the investigation, which the judge granted. CID will file a supplementary charge sheet against Roy, he said. The agency recovered five mobile phones from Sumit and collected other materials, Habib said, adding that investigators would seek further information during custody.A large police contingent led by ASP Uttam Ghosh was deployed around the court premises on Saturday.
