In the 250-member MCD House, the BJP has a comfortable majority of 123 councilors. There are 101 AAP councilors and the remaining include those of Indraprastha Vikas Party, a splinter group separated from AAP, Congress, and independents.
Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj, in a statement, said that the party has decided not to participate in the mayoral polls. The party abstained from contending for mayor and deputy mayor seats even last year.
Bharadwaj said that the AAP, by not participating, will ensure that the BJP comes to rule the MCD and gets exposed through its failures.
“Despite having power at all levels, the BJP has failed to bring about any change in Delhi. The BJP does not know how to perform. Only the AAP knows how to work,” the Aam Aadmi Party leader claimed.
The BJP is in power at the Centre, as well as in Delhi, besides controlling the MCD.
The elections for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor and three members of its standing committee will be held on April 29.
Nominations of councilors for the posts will conclude on April 23 at 5 pm. PTI
