Mohali: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) solidified its hold over the Zirakpur municipal council on Wednesday, securing all three top executive leadership positions unopposed.Engineering graduate and educationist professor Gurpreet Singh Virk, the councillor representing Ward No. 31, was unanimously chosen as the president of the municipal council. Alongside him, Gurvinder Singh Rangi was elected senior vice-president, and Jashanpreet Kaur was elected vice-president.The unopposed voting took place during a special assembly convened right after the oath-taking ceremony of the 31 newly elected councillors. The administrative proceedings were conducted under the supervision of the Derabassi sub-divisional magistrate (SDM).A total of 14 opposition members—consisting of six Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillors, four Congress representatives, and four BJP members—walked out of the chamber. While president Virk has deep roots in academic administration, senior vice-president Rangi is a graduate and national-level sports shooter, and vice-president Kaur is active in regional social service campaigns.Outlining their collective administrative roadmap, the newly appointed office-bearers stated that their core focus will be to strengthen urban civic infrastructure. They pledged to target structural challenges such as sanitation management, traffic congestion, and town water drainage systems to enforce planned development across Zirakpur.Punjab minister to attend installation eventDera Bassi MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa announced during victory celebrations on the municipal complex lawns that Punjab minister Harjot Singh Bains will induct president Gurpreet Singh Virk within the next two to three days.
