While the world came together on March 12 to observe World Kidney Day, the entire month of March serves as Kidney Awareness Month—a vital window to reflect on the innovations transforming renal care. As Country Head for Vantive India, I, Vikas Taneja, believe that as we continue this month-long dialogue, we must remain focused on a singular goal: Expanding access to sustainable renal therapies is the cornerstone of improving outcomes for the millions living with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) in India.

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is a home-based therapy that enables patients to receive renal replacement within the comfort of their own surroundings. By more closely mimicking the body’s natural filtration process, PD allows a steady and gentle removal of toxins and excess fluid and helps in maintaining metabolic stability—a key component in supporting long-term health and overall well-being.

Home-based dialysis helps in minimizing treatment disruptions, supports timely initiation of treatment, and promotes consistent adherence to prescribed therapy. In a country as diverse as ours, home-based PD can expand access to care beyond major urban centres, helping address infrastructure gaps while maintaining clinical rigor. With appropriate training, monitoring, and physician oversight, PD remains a dependable and effective life-sustaining therapy.

Vantive is the vital organ therapy company on a mission to extend lives and expand possibilities for patients and care teams everywhere. We are committed to delivering globally benchmarked, high-quality PD solutions that prioritize safety, reliability, and consistent performance. Our focus extends beyond products—we aim to strengthen clinical education, ensure dependable supply chains, and partner with healthcare providers to responsibly expand PD adoption across India.

While we are proud to advance PD as a strong dialysis option for ESRD patients, the choice of therapy must always co-decide with the nephrologist and patient together, while physician’s clinical judgment remains paramount in determining the most appropriate modality for each patient.

As we move forward through Kidney Awareness Month and into April, let us collectively support informed decisions and broaden access to home-based PD. Vantive is unwavering in its commitment to help more patients pursue longer, healthier, and truly sustainable lives.

Peritoneal Dialysis is an underutilized yet highly effective modality for ESRD patients, as highlighted by Dr. Sanjeev Gulati, Chairman, Nephrology & Kidney Transplant Fortis Group of Hospitals, NCR. Its continuous nature allows better hemodynamic stability and steady toxin clearance, both are critical to maintaining long-term clinical balance. These factors contribute meaningfully to patient well-being.

Home-based PD enables timely therapy initiation and consistent adherence, particularly important in a country where travel to dialysis centres may be challenging. With structured training and careful follow-up, Dr. Sanjeev Gulati notes that PD can serve as a durable long-term renal replacement strategy.

Appropriate patient selection remains the key factor. When prescribed judiciously, PD offers a safe and sustainable pathway to extending survival in ESRD.

Peritoneal Dialysis provides physiological advantages that make it a strong consideration for many ESRD patients, as emphasized by Dr. Umesh Khanna, Consultant Nephrologist & Transplant Physician at Lancelot Kidney & GI Centre, Mumbai. It supports gradual fluid removal and helps preserve longer residual renal function —both closely linked to improved survival outcomes.

In India’s evolving renal care ecosystem, PD offers scalability without compromising clinical integrity. Advances in PD solutions and infection control practices have further strengthened its long-term viability, according to Dr. Umesh Khanna.

However, modality choice must remain individualized. The nephrologist’s evaluation of medical suitability, comorbidities, and patient capability is essential. When aligned correctly, PD can serve as an effective, life-extending therapy for ESRD patients.
