New Delhi: Delhi University is set to more than double its hostel capacity at the university level, with 3,922 new seats being added to the existing 3,422 seats available over the past 100 years. This will take the total number of university-level hostel seats to 7,344.
The university’s colleges will also see an expansion in hostel capacity. Against 3,788 seats currently available across colleges, 1,622 new seats are being added, taking the total capacity to 5,410 seats.
According to the university administration, the combined hostel capacity of Delhi University and its colleges will rise to 12,754 seats. Construction of several new hostels is currently underway, with a number of projects expected to be completed in the coming months.
At the Dhaka Complex alone, construction is underway on an Institute of Eminence (IoE) hostel with 1,450 seats, which is expected to be completed shortly. A 1,000-seat hostel for women, named Nirbhaya Residential Accommodation, is also under construction. In addition, a 1,050-seat studio apartment project is being developed.
Several other hostel projects are also in progress, while work on more new hostel projects is expected to begin in the near future.
The university said it has been focusing on expanding hostel infrastructure over the past few years, with the result that hostel capacity at DU is set to more than double over the last four to five years. The university also plans to submit several new hostel projects to the government shortly.
Delhi University has asked all college principals to review the residential facilities available to students in their respective colleges. Principals have been asked to ensure that ongoing hostel projects are completed at the earliest and made available to students as soon as possible.
The university has also asked colleges to explore the possibility of constructing new hostels. Where feasible, colleges have been advised to prepare plans at the earliest, assessing available land, government schemes and other requirements before initiating construction.
The expansion is aimed at addressing the growing demand for student accommodation across Delhi University and its affiliated colleges.
