TIRUVANNAMALAI: The district police, which has launched an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl near Cheyyar, said the “gang rape” narrative initially reported in a section of media has not been corroborated by their preliminary findings. Police admitted that a sexual offence had occurred, but the nature of the incident differs from early media reports and statements issued by political leaders.Police sources indicate there is currently no evidence that a group of eight men was involved in the crime, as alleged by the leaders of the opposition parties. The police reached the conclusion based on forensic evidence and the victim’s initial statements at the Kancheepuram govt general hospital.The Brammadesam police are now primarily investigating the case as a matter involving a person known to the victim. They are looking into whether a personal dispute or a preexisting relationship with the person known to her led to the incident. The minor girl is still under medical observation in Kancheepuram GH. Her condition is stable. Police are waiting for a detailed medical report to launch a thorough probe.The district administration has urged the public and political leaders to refrain from spreading unverified information, especially given the sensitive nature of the case and the proximity to the assembly elections.
