Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh govt will provide ‘halwa’ and ‘upma’ as supplementary nutrition to children in addition to midday meal in the state-run schools. The rollout will begin in Nov and continue until Feb 2027.
Issuing directions, additional chief secretary, basic education, Parth Sarthi Sen Sharma, said the supplementary nutrition programme will be served once every week on Friday, covering 14 weeks. If a Friday is a holiday, the supplement will be distributed on the next working day.
Under the schedule, halwa will be served on the first and third Fridays of each month, while upma will be served on the second and fourth Fridays. Officials said the initiative is aimed at strengthening child nutrition and improving student participation in schools across the state.
Each student will receive preparations made with a minimum of 30 grams of semolina along with other ingredients. The halwa menu includes semolina, ghee, sugar and grated coconut, while upma will contain semolina, seasonal vegetables, peanuts and spices. The supplement will be distributed during the school mid-break in addition to the regular midday meal.
Schools have been directed to use quality ingredients, preferably packaged and FSSAI-certified, ensure proper storage, maintain beneficiary and stock records, and preserve photographs for monitoring.
