Workshops across Nagpur are abuzz with activity, with local artisans working round the clock to complete idols of the deity ahead of the festival.According to veteran traditional sculptor Suresh Pathak, more than 140 traditional idol-makers in Nagpur are currently engaged in crafting Durga idols for the upcoming celebrations. The city, particularly its central areas, continues to uphold a rich tradition of idol-making that has been passed down through generations. Major hubs of this centuries-old craft include Chitar Oli, Lalganj, Pachpaoli, Timki Budhwari, Balabhau Peth, Mangalwari, Gadikhana Mahal, Shukrawari Kumbharpura, Nandanvan and Jagnade Chowk. In these localities, artisans can be seen working day and night, meticulously shaping and finishing idols. This year, idols of varying sizes are being prepared for Navratri mandals across the city. Industry estimates suggest that over 2,000 idols, ranging from 3ft to 10ft in height, will be produced during the season. At the same time, there has been a noticeable rise in the demand for cheaper and visually appealing Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols in recent years. As a result, a growing number of PoP idols are being imported from outside the city, leading to a marked increase in their presence in the local market.
