Shopian, Oct 3: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a man for allegedly cheating a family by impersonating an employee of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and promising financial assistance for the treatment of a cancer patient.
Police said the complaint was received at Police Station Shopian from Farooq Ahmad Sofi of Manghama, who had posted an appeal on social media seeking financial assistance for his son’s cancer treatment.
According to police, the accused, identified as Umar Shameem Ganie of Memander, allegedly approached the family claiming to be associated with the DC Office and assured them of facilitating financial assistance from the Deputy Commissioner. He allegedly obtained ₹9,999 from the complainant on the pretext.
The accused was later traced by the complainant in Shopian market, where he allegedly manhandled and threatened him. Police subsequently registered an e-FIR and arrested the accused.
Police said preliminary investigation has also brought to light allegations of similar fraudulent activities against other persons, which are being verified.
Police have urged people to remain vigilant against impersonators and verify the credentials of anyone claiming to facilitate financial assistance on behalf of government offices.
