Nagpur: A man who walked out of prison barely three months ago after serving a 17-year murder sentence was arrested on Friday for allegedly beating his wife to death on suspicion of infidelity.Roshan Sahakar, 42, was arrested after his wife Lakshmi, 36, died at Mayo Hospital, following multiple head injuries even as he tried to portray her death as an accident.Kapil Nagar police said, Roshan would often accuse Lakshmi of having an extramarital affair and assault her.On Thursday, Lakshmi collapsed at their house in New MHADA Building No. 2 and Roshan took her to a hospital near Rani Durgavati Chowk in an autorickshaw. She was later referred to Mayo Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The hospital informed Kapil Nagar police through a medico-legal case intimation and cops initially registered an accidental death case. Roshan told police that his wife slipped and fell on the staircase while carrying a bucket of water and suffered head injuries. However, the autopsy raised doubts about his version.Doctors found multiple internal injuries in Lakshmi’s head and skull and the findings prompted police to question Roshan again. During interrogation, Roshan allegedly admitted he had assaulted his wife, but claimed he had only slapped her twice.Police, however, said neighbours gave a different account. They reportedly told investigators that Roshan would beat Lakshmi after consuming alcohol. Some neighbours allegedly saw him hitting her on the head on Thursday.Police said Roshan had been living at Lakshmi’s house after his release from prison in July 2026. He had been convicted in a 2006 murder registered with Pachpaoli police and sentenced to life imprisonment.Roshan and another Sahakar brother were convicted in the case. After his release, Roshan reportedly started working as an RTO agent. Police said he had been drinking heavily and frequently suspected Lakshmi’s character, leading to repeated quarrels. The couple had two children, a nine-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl. With the autopsy report and neighbours’ statements contradicting Roshan’s initial account, police concluded the injuries were caused during the assault. Roshan was arrested and a murder case registered against him.
