CHENNAI: Arappor Iyakkam has alleged irregularities in the grant of affiliation approvals to 74 private colleges of education by Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University between 2023 and 2025.In a complaint submitted to Governor Viswanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and higher education minister P Viswanathan on Thursday, the anti-corruption organisation questioned the manner in which inspection committees assessed the colleges.Arappor Iyakkam said university records showed that an inspection committee had physically visited five colleges located between Tiruvallur and Tuticorin on a single day — March 29, 2023. The organisation claimed that the colleges were located in three districts and that the committee had travelled nearly 560 km on the day.“While an inspection team requires a full day to verify faculty credentials, admissions and infrastructure facilities, how was it possible to inspect five colleges in three districts by travelling 560 km in a single day?” N Radhakrishnan of Arappor Iyakkam asked in the complaint.The organisation said its scrutiny of documents obtained under the Right to Information Act had revealed further discrepancies. According to Arappor, five principals were shown as working simultaneously at two colleges.It also alleged that 37 faculty members bearing the same names were listed against 222 vacancies across the state. The organisation urged the government to verify whether the faculty members existed and whether their credentials had been used to secure university affiliation.Arappor Iyakkam demanded a government inquiry into the alleged irregularities and sought action against colleges found to have submitted forged or misleading documents to obtain affiliation.
