Joseph Altuzarra Brings His Literary Influences and Balloon Pants to Old Navy

When Gap Inc. Creative Director Zac Posen began building Old Navy’s designer collaboration program, one of his top priorities was highlighting American talent. “I thought the American industry needed it, and we have such incredible talent here,” he tells Fashionista.

Anna Sui was the first label to participate in the program, followed by Christopher John Rogers. This fall, Old Navy tapped Altuzarra as its third designer collaborator. “Joseph [Altuzarra] has really built an incredible world, and he has a great sense of care,” Posen says. “He understands the joy and whimsy of our Old Navy customer.” There’s also a high-profile campaign star in the mix: Alexa Chung.

The collaboration came about organically, according to Joseph Altuzarra: “It was a really exciting opportunity to bring the storytelling and world of Altuzarra to the Old Navy customer.” His creative process began the same way he approaches his runway collections: with literature. Specifically, he referenced “Wuthering Heights” (as he did for Fall 2025) and “Pride and Prejudice.”

“I was really inspired by this romantic heroine, these windswept moors and this deep romanticism,” the designer explains. The lineup reflects the romance and mystery of classic fiction through vintage-inspired floral prints, rich jewel tones, Fair Isle sweaters and structured outerwear. However, it blends that literary attitude with Old Navy’s heritage of easy dressing, accessibility and versatile styles.

The limited-edition collection spans outerwear, dresses, tanks, blouses, jeans, trousers and accessories priced from $25 to $140. This is also the first designer collaboration that offers matching styles for girls and toddlers. Standout pieces include a parka with a detachable plaid liner; an embroidered, corduroy-collared jacket; high-waist balloon trousers and scarf dresses. As a cheeky reference to the literary theme, all of the clothing tags double as bookmarks.

“From the very beginning, [this collection] was a dialogue between what we do at Altuzarra — the romanticism, femininity and storytelling of the brand — [and] what Old Navy stands for, which is optimism and ease of American sportswear, and how those two things can come together,” Altuzarra says.
