Patna: Chief minister Samrat Choudhary on Monday directed state officials to fast-track the development of two upcoming greenfield airports at Ajgaibinath Dham and Sonepur. The initial phase of these projects will see a combined first-phase investment of Rs10,000 crore, aiming to enhance air connectivity, tourism, and regional economic trade across the state.According to senior officials, the mega infrastructure projects will be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The first phase of Ajgaibinath Dham airport is estimated to cost Rs3,500 crore, while Sonepur international airport’s initial phase will require an investment of Rs6,500 crore. Bihar govt will separately bear the entire expenditure for land acquisition and providing seamless external connectivity to both sites.Chairing a high-level review meeting at Lok Sevak Awas here, CM evaluated the techno-economic feasibility reports, traffic surveys, master plans, airport capacities, and road connectivity. He emphasised that strict departmental coordination is vital to complete all procedural formalities within the stipulated timeframe.He instructed officials to design the runways and basic infrastructure of Ajgaibinath Dham airport in such a way that the operation of large aircraft becomes possible there. Highlighting the strategic importance of Ajgaibinath Dham airport, Choudhary noted that it would transform tourism and benefit multiple surrounding districts, including Munger, Lakhisarai, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Banka, Khagaria, and Begusarai. Furthermore, it will ease the transit of lakhs of devotees arriving from across India for the annual Shrawani Mela.The review of Sonepur international airport focused on positioning it as a major transit and logistics hub. CM ordered the inclusion of advanced cargo handling facilities alongside superior passenger amenities. Due to its strategic location, the proposed Sonepur airport is expected to serve as a vital economic engine, providing direct air access to 22 districts within Bihar, as well as bordering regions of Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.Choudhary reiterated that both airport projects are foundational to expanding Bihar’s aviation footprint, urging all departments to accelerate ground implementation to unlock the state’s commercial and tourism potential.He said the development of both airport projects will boost air connectivity, tourism, trade, and regional economic activities.
