Thiruvananthapuram: Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) has urged the state govt to expedite the appointment of permanent vice-chancellors to universities and initiate steps to constitute search committees by immediately amending the relevant university laws.The committee said it was unfortunate that the govt was giving priority to establishing private universities while uncertainty continued in the state’s universities in the absence of permanent VCs. The committee said the UDF had strongly opposed the previous LDF govt’s confrontation with the governor over VC appointments and university administration. With the UDF govt completing four months in office, the public expected urgent intervention to address the shortcomings in the higher education sector, it said.SUCC also urged the govt not to appoint people who had benefited from the previous LDF govt to key positions in govt institutions.In a memorandum submitted to chief minister V D Satheesan and UDF convener Adoor Prakash, the committee alleged that the previous LDF govt had protected and accommodated several individuals who had benefited from its patronage. The committee urged the govt to avoid such appointments and ensure that key posts in govt institutions are filled on the basis of merit and integrity.
