NAGPUR: A woman allegedly died by suicide while on a video call with her boyfriend after he refused to marry her despite a long-standing relationship and alleged sexual exploitation on the promise of marriage.Shockingly, the video call reportedly remained connected for 23 minutes after she had taken the extreme step, cops said.Dhantoli police have registered a case of abetment of suicide after a complaint was filed by the deceased’s mother. The accused, a 34-year-old man, is a resident of Amravati. He is currently based in Pune and pursuing a PhD.The deceased, Anjali (name changed), had been employed with a private company in Nagpur since December 2025 and was living with a friend in the Dhantoli area. According to police, the two had been in a relationship since 2015. The man allegedly maintained a physical relationship with her on the assurance that they would marry.A few months ago, the accused, accompanied by a friend, visited Anjali’s mother and expressed his willingness to marry her, the complaint states. Her family reportedly agreed to the proposal. However, after informing his own family, the man was allegedly told that they would not approve of the marriage, the complaint further added. Police said he kept this development from Anjali and continued visiting her in Nagpur.Whenever Anjali raised the issue of marriage, the accused allegedly avoided giving a clear response. Subsequently, he is said to have refused to marry her. The complaint further states that he threatened to circulate her objectionable photographs on social media if she continued to press him over the marriage.The alleged threats and repeated rejection reportedly left Anjali under severe mental distress. As per the complaint, on the night of Sept 19, Anjali tied a scarf to a ceiling fan and placed a video call to the accused. During the call, she allegedly informed him of her intention to end her life. The complaint alleges that the accused did not make any attempt to dissuade her.Anjali then allegedly died by suicide. Her mother further claimed that the video call remained active for nearly 23 minutes after her death. Based on the complaint, Dhantoli Police have registered a case against the accused on a charge of abetment of suicide.
