When Usher first visited the Alpharetta property in 1991, L.A. Reid, the influential music producer and co-founder of LaFace Records, owned it. Reid had converted one of the rooms into a recording studio for his label, giving the house an especially strong connection to the music industry. Years later, Usher recalled the visit on a 2003 episode of BET’s How I’m Living, describing how mesmerised he was by the house and how he remembered wanting to own it someday.By the time Usher was 21, his career was already gaining momentum. His music was attracting major attention, he had appeared on the television sitcom Moesha and completed his first film, The Faculty. That was also when the opportunity to buy the house he had admired as a teenager finally arrived.

Usher paid $1.2 million for the home at 21
In 1999, Usher purchased the Alpharetta mansion for $1.2 million. The 10,823-square-foot residence offered the scale and elaborate interiors associated with a high-end celebrity home of the era. Architectural Digest describes a grand foyer featuring black marble columns, while an open hallway on the second floor overlooked the living room. The living space had a black marble fireplace framed by built-in mahogany bookcases. The primary bedroom also featured a distinctive black-and-gold poster bed. The home’s design was dramatic, with dark finishes and ornate details throughout. Its large size also gave the young musician plenty of room to create spaces suited to both entertaining and his career.For Usher, however, the significance of the purchase went beyond the property itself. He was buying a home he had first seen eight years earlier, when he was still a teenager imagining what his future might look like.
He modernised the mansion in his own style
The house already had a distinctive appearance when Usher bought it, but he later made a series of changes to give the interiors a more contemporary and personal feel. According to Realtor.com, he replaced the original wrought-iron and glass front door with a wooden one. The wrought-iron and mahogany staircase railing was also replaced with muted grey wood.The living room underwent a notable transformation. The original built-in bookcases were replaced with floating shelves, while the fireplace received a wooden mantel and herringbone-patterned brick, giving the space a more rustic appearance. The kitchen was similarly updated. Its central island was transformed into a muted teal design topped with marble. A farmhouse sink, sliding metal door, bench seating and rustic tables added a more relaxed look to the space. The bathrooms were also redesigned with vintage-style tile, white marble and glass shower doors.

A home shaped around Usher’s career
Some of the mansion’s most distinctive spaces reflected Usher’s life as a performer. The property included a dedicated dance studio equipped with floor-to-ceiling mirrors and a substantial sound system. That was alongside a home theatre, yoga studio, spa and sauna. Outside, the property offered a heated pool and summer kitchen, adding to its entertainment-focused layout.
Nearly two decades later, Usher sold the mansion
Usher remained the owner of the Alpharetta property for nearly two decades. During those years, his career expanded dramatically, transforming him from a young performer into one of the most recognised names in R&B and pop music. In 2018, the mansion finally went on the market. Realtor.com and Architectural Digest reported that Usher sold the property for $1.5 million in June of that year.The transaction brought an end to an unusual real-estate story that had begun with a 13-year-old visiting a music producer’s home. Eight years after that first visit, Usher had purchased the same property for $1.2 million. He then spent years updating the 10,823-square-foot mansion to reflect his own tastes and lifestyle before eventually selling it for $1.5 million.
