PUNE: A techie from Baner allegedly ran over a casual worker sleeping along a road at Mamta Chowk in Balewadi around 5.30am on Friday, then took him to a hospital and told police he had found the man unconscious on the road. Police later traced the car’s route and found the spot where the man was actually run over. CCTV footage of the incident has also been recovered.The deceased, Baba Baburao Chavan (54), a resident of Katraj, was a casual worker who slept on footpaths along isolated roads across the city. He died at a hospital in Aundh.Baner police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver. “Our team has started searching for the driver,” senior inspector Chandrashekar Sawant said.According to Sawant, the driver was trying to negotiate a left turn when another vehicle passed very close to his car. To avoid a collision, he swerved sharply to the left and ran over Chavan.The driver then picked up the injured man and drove off. On Baner Road, he met a police patrolling team and told them he had found Chavan unconscious on the road and was taking him for treatment, Sawant said. He then took Chavan to the Aundh hospital, where the man died.Police reached the hospital and took details of the driver and the deceased. The driver then led them to another spot and claimed he had found Chavan there, Sawant said.“Our team then tracked the route of the car to ascertain where exactly the car driver had picked up Chavan.
