Nagpur: For a district that spent decades making headlines for Maoist insurgency rather than infrastructure development, Monday will mark a significant milestone as South East Central Railway’s (SECR) Nagpur division conducts inspection and speed trial on the Wadsa-Armori section, paving the way for commissioning of the long-awaited Wadsa-Gadchiroli broad-gauge railway line.The speed trial is regarded as the final major technical exercise before the route is opened for regular passenger and freight operations, bringing Gadchiroli closer to the national railway network.First surveyed in 2008-09, the project has witnessed prolonged delays due to challenges including forest clearances, land acquisition and funding constraints. Over the years, the project cost has escalated several times, eventually crossing the ₹1,000-crore mark.For Gadchiroli, one of Maharashtra’s most remote and tribal-dominated districts, the railway line represents a transformative development. Until a decade ago, Wadsa was the district’s only railhead, serving vast stretches of the region and India’s largest tribal parliamentary constituency.According to an official railway notification, the inspection and speed trial will be conducted between 6 am and 8 pm on Monday, with trains operating at the required speed on the newly laid track. Railway authorities have appealed to villagers, farmers and cattle owners residing along the route to stay away from the tracks during the trial period.“Residents should ensure that children and livestock do not venture near the track during the trial. Even a moment of carelessness can prove fatal,” a railway official said.The railway project assumes added significance amid the state’s broader plans for Gadchiroli’s economic transformation. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has repeatedly projected the mineral-rich district as a future industrial hub, with proposed investments in iron ore mining, steel manufacturing, logistics and allied infrastructure, alongside plans for a mining corridor, an airport, and even a river and highway link to ports on Andhra Pradesh coast..Officials believe the new rail connectivity could become a crucial enabler for these projects. Large quantities of iron ore currently transported by road could be shifted to rail, reducing pressure on highways, lowering transportation costs and improving industrial viability. The connectivity is also expected to generate employment opportunities in mining, logistics and manufacturing sectors.Beyond industrial growth, improved rail access is likely to strengthen social and educational infrastructure in the district. The expansion of higher education through Gondwana University, along with improving healthcare facilities and govt institutions, has already begun changing perceptions about Gadchiroli as a destination for students, professionals and investors.Railway officials described Monday’s exercise as a routine but critical safety and operational requirement ahead of commissioning. They urged residents to strictly adhere to safety advisories during the trial run.Once operational, the Wadsa-Gadchiroli rail corridor is expected to do more than provide transport connectivity. For many residents, it represents the culmination of a long-awaited effort to integrate one of Maharashtra’s most isolated districts with the country’s mainstream economic and transportation network, said the official.
