Gurgaon: An unfinished section of a master stormwater drain near Sector 70A has been disrupting traffic movement, narrowing the usable road and leaving water accumulated in pits. GMDA is constructing the drainage network from sectors 68 to 75 at a cost of Rs 51 crore. Although financial approval for the project was granted in July 2024, with a deadline of Aug this year, the work has been progressing slowly.Residents said a nearly 200-metre section near the intersection of sectors 70 and 70A has remained incomplete for around eight months. Slab work was started after repeated complaints but was later left incomplete, they said. “The drain work has been pending for about eight months. If the authorities cannot complete it immediately, at least the stretch should be filled and levelled properly. Several complaints have been filed, but they have either been closed without resolving the issue or have not resulted in any visible action,” said Rajat Srivastava, a resident of Astaire Gardens. A road that is already less than 12 metres wide is effectively reduced to around five metres during rush hours, residents said, leaving vehicles travelling in both directions to negotiate the narrow passage.Residents also flagged stagnant water around the unfinished drain as a potential mosquito-breeding site. “This is our main access to the master road and it has been closed for months now. The area has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Numerous school buses use this passage, while a play school is situated opposite the drain. The civic authority should ensure speedy completion of the drain work and restore the road,” said Harshad Shah, another resident.When contacted, a GMDA official said the work was in progress and that the drains would be covered. “Soon, all such drains will be covered. No drain will be left uncovered,” the official said.
