Scientists have identified a previously unrecognised wild cat species in Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forest, marking the first discovery of a new living cat species in more than a century. Named Leopardus tilcayo, or the Tilcayo, the small spotted feline was identified through genetic research involving dozens of wild cats from across South America. Researchers found that the species is genetically distinct and belongs to the tiger cat group. The discovery also revealed greater diversity among South America’s small wild cats than previously understood. Scientists say further research is needed to understand its population, behaviour and conservation needs.
