Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad police and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) demolished at least 18 stalls at PMT Chowk in Bhosari for illegally facilitating liquor consumption on Wednesday. The police also registered cases against 180 people for drinking in public since Sept 1.Deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) Maruti Jagtap said there were complaints regarding roadside stalls on both sides of the road near PMT Chowk allowing people to consume liquor in public by providing space and material for drinking. “PMT Chowk is a busy public area with heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement. Liquor consumption around paan and food stalls was causing inconvenience to citizens and could have created law-and-order issues.”A joint team of Bhosari police and the civic body inspected the area and took action against encroachments and unauthorised stalls. “This was aimed at curbing illegal businesses and preventing shopkeepers from facilitating public drinking,” Jagtap said.Jagtap said action against public drinking, illegal businesses and activities causing nuisance to citizens would continue. “We have appealed to residents to share information about such activities with us,” Jagtap added.
