NARNAUL: A Haryana Police head constable has been suspended after a medical examination confirmed that he had consumed alcohol, following allegations by local residents that the policeman was allegedly involved in the sale of narcotic substances, including “chitta”.The allegations of drug peddling, however, are still under investigation, with police saying no conclusive evidence has emerged so far.The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when a group of residents from the Bade Mohalla area gathered outside the City police station at around 8pm, alleging that EHC Sanjay, a head constable posted with Haryana Police, was under the influence of alcohol and was also involved in the alleged sale of narcotic substances.The protest continued for nearly 40minutes, with residents raising their concerns outside the police station.During the commotion, City police station SHO Virendra Singh told the protesters that the head constable regularly visited the locality to purchase milk and that he had gone there on Tuesday evening for the same purpose.The SHO had also alleged that some of the people participating in the protest had themselves consumed alcohol.He said that if the policeman was subjected to a medical examination, those creating the disturbance should also undergo medical tests.Following the developments, senior police authorities ordered a medical examination of the head constable.DSP Bharat Bhushan said that police took the allegations seriously and got the employee medically examined.According to the DSP, the medical report returned positive for alcohol consumption.“Some people had alleged on Tuesday evening that a Haryana Police personnel was under the influence of alcohol and was also involved in the sale of narcotic substances. Considering the seriousness of the matter, we got the employee medically examined. His report came positive. He has been suspended for the time being and an inquiry has been initiated,” the DSP said.He added that further action would be taken on the basis of the findings of the inquiry.While the medical examination confirmed alcohol consumption, the allegations that the policeman was involved in selling “chitta” or other narcotic substances have not yet been substantiated, police said.DSP Bharat Bhushan said no conclusive evidence regarding the alleged sale of narcotic substances had emerged so far.The matter is being investigated, and if the employee is found guilty, action will be taken against him in accordance with the rules.The DSP also reiterated that Mahendragarh Police follows a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs.He said strict action would be taken against anyone, whether a police employee or a member of the public, found involved in supplying narcotic substances.The police said its campaign against drug abuse and narcotics trafficking in the district would continue.For now, the suspension relates to the confirmation of alcohol consumption through the medical examination, while the more serious allegations concerning the alleged sale of narcotic substances remain subject to investigation.
