New Delhi: Congress on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi must answer four questions since his bilateral summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping got over, including about reported Chinese “territorial advances” in Arunachal Pradesh and whether India softened its stand on Chinese support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor in order to facilitate the Modi-Xi meeting.
Former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid said the government should take the Opposition into confidence about Modi-Xi talks. “What happened during the prime minister’s talks with the Chinese president, what points were raised, what was China’s response to them, and what path forward has been considered?” he said.
Maintaining that “normalisation of India’s relations with China is one thing, but what has been in evidence on your (PM) part is calibrated capitulation”, Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh asked in an official statement, “Why have you allowed China’s territorial advances in Ladakh and now Arunachal Pradesh?… Our traditional patrolling and grazing rights across large stretches of eastern Ladakh have been quietly but definitely surrendered.”
The party also asked whether the PM “allowed softening of India’s position” on China’s role in support of Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. “On August 25, 2026, the former Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan took a completely different position in a lecture at the VIF (Vivekananda International Foundation), with which the national security adviser has been closely associated. Was this part of a strategy to change the atmospherics leading up to yesterday’s meeting?” Further, “didn’t your infamous clean chit to China (after the Galwan Valley incident) on June 19, 2020, weaken India?”
