Patna: A 12-year-old boy had a narrow escape after accidentally inhaling a whistle while playing with it, with the foreign object becoming lodged in his bronchus. Doctors at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) removed the whistle through bronchoscopy in a joint procedure involving the pulmonary, ENT and anaesthesia departments on Friday.According to PMCH superintendent Dr Rajiva Kumar, the child accidentally sucked the whistle into his airway while blowing it. It travelled into the bronchus and became lodged there, posing a risk to his breathing.After the child was brought to the hospital, a team from the pulmonary department, led by senior doctor Dr Saima Ejaz, examined him and decided to remove the foreign body through bronchoscopy.The procedure was performed at ENT operation theatre no. 2. The pulmonary team was assisted by junior residents Dr Aditya and Dr Roshan, under the guidance of head of department Dr B K Chaudhary and senior teacher Dr Samarendra Jha.The ENT department, headed by Dr Preeti Sharma, also assisted in the procedure. The anaesthesia team, under the guidance of Dr Sudama, helped maintain the child’s stability during the intervention.Hospital officials said timely intervention and coordination among the three departments helped avert complications.
