Aizawl: A 56-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday after allegedly firing six rounds at a two-wheeler owner following a hit-and-run incident near Vanapa Hall in central Aizawl, police said.Aizawl SP Zosangliana said the accused, Lalruata Hlawndo of College Veng, allegedly hit a scooter parked by the roadside around 9.30pm on Monday.Hlawndo reportedly tried to flee but was pursued by the two-wheeler. He then allegedly fired six rounds from a .32-calibre pistol at the man. No one was injured.Police arrested Hlawndo from his home in College Veng around 3.30am on Tuesday and recovered the weapon from his possession. The SP said the accused had borrowed the pistol from a friend and did not possess a firearm or gun licence.A case has been registered at Aizawl Police Station and further investigation is underway.The incident was described as highly unusual in Aizawl, where such street violence has been rare since the 1986 peace accord between the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front and the Centre.Zosangliana said police personnel conduct night patrols and remain on duty until late to maintain security in the city. He added that the police were taking steps to prevent crime and that the number of cases had declined compared with last year.
