New Delhi: A 33-year-old contractual worker died after allegedly being electrocuted inside Delhi University’s South Campus Monday, prompting police to register a case of death by negligence.Police said a PCR call was received around 5.30 am on Sept 7 regarding the death of a man, a resident of a JJ Camp, who had allegedly suffered an electric shock on the campus. He was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.Preliminary inquiry revealed that the deceased, a resident of Sri Ram Moti Bagh, was working as a gardener and allegedly got an electric shock while carrying out tree-pruning work.A case has been registered under Sections 287 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway.Following the incident, family members and students staged a protest, alleging negligence on the part of university authorities. “The deceased had been hired on a contractual basis as a gardener, but was being made to do the work of an electrician,” said a protester, Shubham.The protesters demanded compensation for the family and a permanent job for the victim’s wife.A university official said representatives of the administration met the bereaved family and are considering providing employment to the next of kin or extending financial assistance.The university expressed grief over the employee’s death and extended condolences to the family.
